How in-cab video works
Most in-cab video systems work in a similar fashion. They typically have a forward lens focused on what is happening outside the vehicle and an inside lens that looks at the driver and passenger. An accelerometer measures sudden movements such as rapid deceleration. The devices record continuously but save video when there is an event — such as hard braking or an alert from other safety systems like collision avoidance or lane departure warning — keeping the seconds before and after the event.
In-cab video as a training tool
One of the most valuable benefits of video systems is coaching and training drivers. When risky behaviors are noted, driver managers can review the clip with the driver and coach on the behavior that led to the incident. Conversely, if the video was triggered because the driver took evasive action to avoid a collision, they can be recognized for doing a good job. Driving behavior can be positively affected just by the camera being there.
Finding more uses
Beyond recording events, in-cab video can integrate with side-view cameras — some customers install rear-facing cameras to make sure a flatbed load is strapped correctly — and the data can be used for analytics showing which drivers need coaching, which are improving and which are doing great.
